Well that makes a bit more sense and you make some good points there. It would seem that we have deviated from the original topic a bit but I have found this little debate thoroughly enjoyable anyway lol
I would love to hear from some of you in game so if anyone wants to add me to their friends list. My toons name is Fyre Starter (and yes I am a guy playing a girl toon but that’s a whole different thread, one that got deleted I think).

I think the financial model for the game has influenced how it has been designed. I think this partically because one of the ArenaNet founded stated that explicitly in an interview.
I probably also think so because I haven't played enough MMORPG's to have a fixed idea of what anything "must" be. So I look at the game for what it is, rather than what other games I know have been.

I could, but I would lose. The game is 50% PvP, and the PvP is based on skill, not time played. Thus it has substantiably less than 90% "more in common" with World of Warcraft than with Counter Strike. The PvE is of course more similar to WoW, especially the pre-Ascension part where level (and thus: time played) still play a significant role.
I'll agree that the superficial similarities can be decieving.

I have never actually found any of those advertisements. What I have found repeatedly is ArenaNet personet insisting that the game is a new genre, called CORPG, competitive online role playing game.
I have found lots of previews that calls it a MMORPG, especially from those previewers that never left pre-searing Ascalon.
Edit: Ok, I talk too much. I promise not respond more in this thread.

Yes, but you misunderstood me here. I mean if we only compare it to world of warcraft and CS. No other games, that it would be much more like WoW.
Yes, they did advertise (and not stamp out the rumor) that this would be a non-pay to play mmorpg. Thats why they put so much emphasis on there not being a fee on everything.
As for talking, feel free to continue. I love a good debate and I have no bad feelings towards you for giving your opinion. Its what makes these forums great.
